Dimethyl Silicone Oil: An Overview

Hits: 680 img

Dimethyl silicone oil is a newly synthesized liquid to semi-solid high-molecular-weight compound, also known as polydimethylsiloxane. It consists of an inorganic silicon-oxygen backbone with methyl side chains and appears as a colorless liquid at room temperature, insoluble in water. The following is a detailed introduction to dimethyl silicone oil:

I. Basic Properties
Dimethyl silicone oil exhibits a wide range of viscosities, a low temperature-viscosity coefficient, a high expansion coefficient, a high flash point, resistance to high and low temperatures, weathering, chemical corrosion, and radiation, low surface tension, high insulation properties, and resistance to shear. Its chemical properties are extremely stable, and it does not decompose or oxidize at room temperature. Furthermore, it has a wide operating temperature range and can be used in environments ranging from -50°C to 200°C.

II. Application Fields
Electromechanical Industry: Dimethyl silicone oil is widely used as an insulating medium in motors, electrical appliances, and electronic instruments. It is also used as an impregnating agent for transformers, capacitors, and scanning transformers in televisions.
Defoamer: Due to its low surface tension and insolubility in water, as well as its good chemical stability and non-toxicity, dimethyl silicone oil is widely used as a defoamer in the petroleum, chemical, medical, pharmaceutical, food processing, textile, dyeing, and papermaking industries.
Release Agent: Dimethyl silicone oil has non-stick properties with rubber, plastics, and metals, making it suitable as a release agent for the molding and processing of various rubber and plastic products.
Lubricant: Dimethyl silicone oil is suitable as a lubricant for rubber and plastic bearings and gears. It can also be used for lubrication in rolling friction between steel and steel or between steel and other metals at high temperatures.
Medical and Health Care: Dimethyl silicone oil is non-toxic to humans and is not decomposed by bodily fluids. Therefore, it is used to make oral gastrointestinal anti-flatulence tablets and pulmonary edema anti-foam aerosol sprays.

In addition, dimethyl silicone oil can also be used as a gloss enhancer for paints, an additive for inks and polishing oils, and as a coating material for treating optical instruments, medicine bottles, and film.

In summary, dimethyl silicone oil has a wide range of applications in various fields due to its unique physical and chemical properties.
