1.Concept analysis of ethyl silicone rubber
Ethyl silicone rubber (Diethyl Silicone Rubber) is a polymer material that introduces ethyl groups into the side chains of dimethyl polysiloxane through chemical modification. Its main molecular chain is an inorganic structure of "Si-O-Si" and its side chain is an ethyl (C₂H₅) substituent. This structure gives it unique low-temperature properties, and its lowest glass transition temperature can reach -147°C, making it the silicone rubber variety with the best known low-temperature resistance. As a typical representative of diethyl silicone rubber, it significantly improves low-temperature flexibility by destroying the crystallization properties of traditional silicone rubber, and has become a core material for deep-cold equipment, high-cold areas and extreme environment applications.
2.Core characteristics of ethyl silicone rubber
Ultra-low temperature adaptability
Ethyl silicone rubber maintains elasticity in a wide temperature range of -70°C to 200°C, and is particularly good at dealing with extreme low temperatures. Its cold resistance is better than that of dimethyl silicone rubber and methyl vinyl silicone rubber. The higher the ethyl content, the more significant the low-temperature performance. For example, rubber containing 8 mol% diethylsiloxy chain segments can maintain flexibility at -147°C, which is suitable for Antarctic scientific research equipment, spacecraft cryogenic seals and other scenarios.
Dynamic performance stability
Ethyl silicone rubber has a constant elastic modulus and a constant damping factor, and can maintain stable mechanical properties in temperature fluctuations or vibration environments. This feature makes it a key material for damping and vibration reduction of precision electronic equipment, which can effectively absorb impact energy and protect instruments from vibration damage.
Weather resistance and insulation
Ethyl silicone rubber inherits the weather resistance advantage of silicone rubber, has high resistance to ultraviolet rays, ozone and chemical corrosion, and has a service life of up to decades. At the same time, its excellent electrical insulation performance (volume resistivity>10¹⁵ Ω·cm) makes it widely used in high-voltage cables, electronic component packaging and other fields.
Functional customizability
Ethyl silicone rubber can achieve performance optimization by adjusting the ethyl content or introducing other functional groups. For example, increasing the ethyl content can further improve the low-temperature performance, but the heat resistance needs to be balanced; adding fluorine groups can enhance oil resistance and expand its application boundaries in the petroleum industry.
