It is widely used in the finishing of fabrics with low performance requirements, such as non-woven fabrics, burlap, and industrial canvas, achieving a basic smoothing effect at a very low cost. It is also commonly used as a core component of textile thread oils for lubricating sewing and embroidery threads, preventing thread breakage and skipped stitches during high-speed sewing. However, its drawbacks are also significant: weak adhesion to fibers, poor wash resistance, rapid decline in hand feel after several washes, and the resulting fabric prone to hydrophobicity, making it unsuitable for the processing needs of high-end close-fitting textiles.

With the rapid popularization of new organosilicon softeners such as amino-modified and hydrophilic-modified ones, the market share of pure dimethyl silicone oil in the high-end textile auxiliaries market has continued to shrink, gradually shifting from a mainstream product to a supplementary basic auxiliary agent. Currently, the industry rarely uses pure dimethyl silicone oil directly as a final softener; it is mostly used as a compounding ingredient, combined with other modified components to adjust the slipperiness and cost of the auxiliary agent.
