The primary principle for selection is scenario-driven: natural and synthetic fibers such as cotton, linen, and polyester each have their own specific models. For example, cotton block silicone oil has self-emulsifying capabilities and resistance to acids, alkalis, and high temperatures, exhibiting excellent stability under alkaline high-temperature conditions; while smooth block silicone oil excels in providing a smooth, lubricating, and supple hand feel, suitable for smoothing and softening fabrics such as polyester, cotton-polyester blends, and nylon. It is essential to first determine the type of fiber in the substrate before selecting the appropriate model.
II. Adjusting Molecular Weight According to Hand Feel Requirements
Molecular weight is the key to determining the hand feel. Block silicone oils synthesized from low-molecular-weight epoxy silicone oils have excellent permeability, giving fabrics a soft and lightweight feel; high-molecular-weight products, due to stronger intermolecular forces, form a dense protective layer on the fiber surface, bringing a full and elastic tactile experience. For a fluffy feel, the molecular weight can be appropriately increased; for a smooth and delicate finish, low molecular weight raw materials should be selected. New generation epoxy-terminated block polyether silicone oils (such as IOTA ES13K) have pre-embedded high molecular weight hydrophilic polyether segments in their structure, resulting in a more natural and delicate feel.
III. Prioritizing Hydrophilicity and Environmental Compliance
High-quality block silicone oils must balance hydrophilicity and environmental friendliness. By selecting polyether diamines of different molar masses (such as ED900), an optimal balance between feel and lint can be achieved. Simultaneously, it is essential to choose products that are APEO-free, do not yellow, and do not stick to rollers to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations.
IV. Focus on Compatibility and Processing Technology
Block silicone oils need good compatibility with cationic and nonionic additives. It is recommended to use a one-dip-one-nip or two-dip-two-nip process, followed by high-temperature baking and curing. When purchasing, pay attention to the product's shelf life (usually six to twelve months) and transportation stability to ensure a smooth process from warehousing to installation.
