The Development History of Silicone Softeners in China

Hits: 289 img

Emerging and Initial Stage (1950s-1970s)
Research on silicone softeners in China began in the 1950s. Driven by the demands of the Korean War, the country began to emphasize the research and development of silicone materials. In 1951, the Beijing Chemical Research Institute established a silicone research group, marking the official start of China's silicone industry. However, research during this period mainly focused on the production of silicone monomers and basic silicone materials; softeners, as a sub-sector, had not yet formed an independent system. In the late 1970s, with the introduction of international silicone softener technology, China began to attempt to apply silicone to the textile finishing field, but due to limitations in technology and equipment, the performance of its products lagged significantly behind imported products.

Technology Introduction and Independent R&D Stage (1980s-1990s)
After the reform and opening up, China's silicone softener industry entered a period of rapid development. In the 1980s, the Shanghai Additives Factory cooperated with Ciba-Geigy to produce Ultratex FSA softener, promoting the advancement of silicone softener technology in China. Meanwhile, domestic research institutions and enterprises began to independently develop silicone softeners. Sichuan Chenguang Chemical Research Institute successfully developed the first hydrophilic silicone softener CGF and the first amino silicone oil microemulsion softener, filling a domestic gap. In the 1990s, with the development of aliphatic softener sheets and the maturation of silicone softener production technology, China's silicone softener industry gradually formed a complete industrial chain.

Rapid Development and Industrial Upgrading Stage (21st Century to Present)
Entering the 21st century, China's silicone softener industry ushered in a period of rapid development. With the booming development of downstream industries such as textiles and leather, the market demand for silicone softeners continued to grow. Domestic enterprises continuously increased their R&D investment, promoting product upgrades and replacements, and high-performance products such as block-modified silicone oils gradually became the market mainstream. At the same time, increasingly stringent environmental policies accelerated the elimination of traditional non-silicone softeners, and silicone softeners, with their advantages of low irritation and biodegradability, became the mainstream alternative. In recent years, the Chinese silicone softener market has continued to expand, and the technological level has continued to improve, with some products reaching international advanced levels.
